2016 Kansas State Fair entries

It’s that time of year, time for the Kansas State Fair.  I’ve been very busy this year with things other than tatting but I wanted to enter something in the fair. It’s my attempt to keep them from dropping the category.  Last year there were only a few entries, which has me worried about the category disappearing.  I’m not all that confident in my entries, but they will be out there, showing the general public that tatting is not “a lost art.”

I took my doily with “Harper” edging that I had entered in the county fair.  It was already made, might as well take it, right?

Only one item per person can be entered in the only tatting category they have so I always look for other types of category/classes that will work for tatting.  There are several holiday classes that don’t specify media type that fit the bill.  I entered a Christmas decoration and a holiday, non-Christmas decoration.

I had several ideas for the Christmas decoration.  First thought was covering a satin ball.  I have several balls, and even downloaded a few patterns.  And changed my mind.  Then I was going to do a 3-D bell.  And changed my mind.  It ended up being a 3-D angel instead.

The main body developed with only a few changes, other than it started as a bell and ended up the angel body.  The wings came out great the first try.  As I hadn’t planned on it being an angel I didn’t plan how to attach the wings while tatting.  They were sewn on after both body and wings were complete.  The hard part was the halo.  Yes, the halo.  I made something like six different ones before I was happy with the result.  These pictures do not show the halo that finished off the angel right before taking it to the fair.  I forgot to take a picture.

The third item was the non-Christmas decoration.  I had a terrible time even coming up with an idea of what to take.  I’ve done Halloween and Thanksgiving in the past, maybe I should choose another holiday?  Nope, it came down to Halloween again.  It was down to the wire on whether it would even make it to the fair or not.  I started multiple ideas and messed up all of them.  The final touches were added just before leaving the house.

I downloaded the ‘Pearl Tatted Skeleton’ by Martha Ess to start with.  It did not turn out well, so I tried a couple of other things, which ended badly as well.  Then I perused Lindsay Rogers’ book ‘Tatting Collage’, hoping for inspiration.  The outcome was a combination of things, using parts of the skeleton and a few ideas from the book.  I don’t feel this is quite done, but I ran out of time.  It’s not my best work, and I have no idea what the judges will think, but I took it to the fair anyway.

Whew! I’m glad I have the fair items taken care of.  Becky, one of the Tuesday Tatters, took me with her to drop things off yesterday.  She entered a beautiful quilt and a quilt block but no tatting (we talked about that 🙂 ).  She is going to the fair on Friday, opening day, and will text me the results.  I hope to make it on Monday.

Now that is done I can make sure I’m all ready for Palmetto Tat Days.  It’s this week!!  I’m so excited! This is my first time going.  It’s gonna be great!  Hope to see a few of you there!

Seen at the fair

I thought I’d show you the other tatting that was entered into the fair. These all competed against each other (and me!) as there was only one tatting category.
The snowman won first and the larger snowflake won second. My doily (from last week’s post) won third. The Christmas-colored doily that hung below mine didn’t win anything, but it was make by the same person who made the snowman, and you can only win one ribbon per category.
I thought this was a lovely display. Isn’t this a great idea for showing off your tatting?
This was actually entered as Heirloom Embroidery, not tatting, but check out how she added joined the panels together. Wow!
This is a Bobbin Lace bookmark, made by a woman that also entered tatting. Isn’t it beautiful? The other one is machine embroidery, and looks great, too. I don’t know how the judges make their decisions!
This is a Halloween quilt that took second place in that category. I didn’t compete against these, but I thought they were wonderful. My pictures don’t do them justice.
This one took champion in the holiday quilt category. It certainly is spectacular.
Congratulations to all the people to enter their pieces at the fair. Keep up the great work.
And to all the people out there who tat – think about entering something next year! I know you’re out there. We’ve got to keep the category alive!

Fair Results

I made it to the fair yesterday, but by the time I got home I was just too tired to do much but go to bed. So the pictures had to wait until today.
This is what I came up with for a Christmas decoration. I didn’t expect it to win anything and it didn’t. I wanted to enter as much tatting as possible, and that I had time to make. It’s not quite what I planned to do, but it’s what got done. You can see the picture that won champion in the same class, Christmas decoration.
As you can see, my doily took third place. When it was shown at the Harvey County fair it was laying down, so the way I mounted it was fine. At the state fair they hung it on the wall and the center sagged a bit. I’ve learned a lesson for next year! Below my doily is a red, white and green doily. It’s hard to tell with it mounted that way, but it looked pretty good to me.
These are the entries that competed with my spider and web. This was Holiday decoration, and you could enter one per holiday. It looks like all holidays compete against each other, not each holiday by itself.
And, yes, it got a blue ribbon! I was pleasantly surprised. I knew it would be competing against a variety of media, and didn’t know if the judges would like the tatting or not.
Next week I’ll show some of the other tatting that was entered.

Going to the fair

I plan on going to the state fair tonight after work, where I will see how my entries have done. I hope to get pictures, get back to the house and post before I have to go to bed. This week has been nothing like normal so if you don’t hear more from me today, look for a post tomorrow.

Getting Ready For the State Fair

This is the mess on my table after trying to get things finished for the Kansas State Fair. No actual tatting done, but at least I got a cup of tea in (Country Peach Passion – yum!)
I’ve been busy with getting things made and put together for several weeks now. I haven’t been on the Internet much, I’ve been too busy tatting. And planning. There is only one class for tatting at the state fair but I wanted to get a few more items of tatting there if I could. Looking through the options I found they have a category for Christmas decorations and one for holiday decoration, one per holiday. So that makes three categories I thought I could enter.
I entered my antique motif doily (of course!). This is at a higher level than the county fair but I think it has a chance to do well. Then I had an idea for a Christmas decoration using those snowflakes I’ve been working on. I just couldn’t get my plan to work out but entered them anyway. They still look nice but nothing spectacular. And I forgot to take a picture of it before I dropped it off.
I chose a Halloween decoration for the other entry. I had this idea of a spider on a web using one of Jane Eborall’s patterns. But I just couldn’t get those floating chains! *head hangs in shame* I worked on it for half a day, but running out of time I had to do something else. I did come up with a spider, making the legs out of split rings similar to the way Jane made the legs on her stork. The body has a few issues but still looks pretty good. I added a black bead for the body and glass beads for head and eyes. I had planned a black spider but felt it would not be seen well on the black background I had in mind, so it’s made of gold Cebelia size 30, color 437. This actually worked better than the size 20 black that was planned, because being a smaller thread the legs worked better. The web is made of size 70 Lizbeth color 602 natural (not-quite white) and a strand of metallic coats thread, a Nylon and Polyester blend. I started once, then realized I made a bit of a mistake so had to start over. I got soooo tired of doing this. The last round is made of chains, each of 35 double stitches. Not very stimulating, and a lot of chance of mis-counting. But I’m very happy with the result.

I hope the judges at the fair like it, too. I’m going to call this #22 of my second 25 Motif Challenge. This was very much a challenge!
I might know by next week how my entries did at the fair. I’ve told several people who have plans to go to let me know the results if they get there before I do. The fair lasts ten days but I’m not sure what day I’ll get to go. There is a lot to see and do at the fair – I’m really looking forward to it.

Odds and Ends

During our trip to Colorado I did tat a little bit – I made another bookmark, a variation of the one I did a couple of weeks ago. This was done mostly while driving and with a few trials of different ways to achieve the same end. I don’t know if it’s just the color combination or the different things I tried, but the chains don’t quite look right. Of course I noticed that the most while I was blocking it, otherwise I like how it turned out. It’s made in Lizbeth Caribbean and black size 20.

State Fair
I did mention that I had a few more fair pictures.

This is the butter sculpture. There were so many people looking at it that it was hard to get close enough to see it let alone take a picture; I hope you can make them out. Amazing what someone can do with butter!

My grandson really enjoyed the goats. He kept trying to give them hugs and kisses.

There was a remote controlled robot named Oscar talking to people and keeping everyone laughing. I don’t know where the person was who controlled him, but Oscar commented on the people around him and moved around interacting with the crowd. My grandson thought Oscar was great until we got him up close, then it wasn’t fun any more.

I thought this was definitely the winner of the fair!

Surprise in the sky
We were on the way to work Friday and saw what at first we thought were some odd looking clouds. And then we realized they weren’t clouds.

The Thunderbirds were going to be at the air show at McConnell Air Force base open house on Saturday and Sunday and we were seeing their practice.

We kept an eye on the sky all the way from Newton to Wichita, about 25 miles, and saw quite the show, even from that distance. We weren’t going to be able to go to the show but we got to enjoy a bit of it anyway.

Tatting Tea Tuesday
I’m enjoying Tazo Refresh tea today. It is refreshing on this cool, fall morning. My tatting today is what it’s been for the last week, a project inspired by the bed and breakfast we stayed in while we were in Leadville. I’ve been so excited about it that I’ve spent almost all my time working on it. The house definitely looks like it, too – I really need to get up and take care of it. But I’d really rather be tatting!

May all of you have a wonderful week with a little tea and tatting in it!

A bookmark and the Kansas State Fair

I’ll start off with what I made when I got home from the state fair Saturday, a bookmark for the “Bookmark a Month Challenge” on The Tatting Forums. This is made with Manuela size 20 in color 021 (thanks AnneB for the translation!) I actually made one first in Lizbeth Jellybean but I made many of the picots too long. In fact, I dislike it so much that I almost didn’t finish it. But I forced myself to and then made this one. I didn’t use any pattern for this, though I think I’ve seen something similar somewhere.

The Kansas state fair was fun and it was a beautiful day for it. But there was very little tatting this year. I was very disappointed and angry at myself for not trying harder to get something entered. My sister and I have agreed that we both will enter at least one thing next year, and maybe more. With us encouraging each other I think it just might be a reality next September.

These pictures are of the only tatting I found there this year. They may be an item or two I missed because of the way they displayed them, but not more.

Nice display, isn’t it? A great idea for all those snowflakes I like to make.
Check out the multiple ribbons through the center – another nice idea.
Kind of disappointing that they left the ribbon in front of the doily. The earrings and snowflake didn’t show up well with the tag behind them, either. I didn’t do such a great job on taking these pictures, did I?
That white bar along the bottom is a reflection of the light fixture. This was not hanging in a place that I could get any closer to it.

In the Domestic Arts building where the tatting is displayed they have the textile arts such as quilts, embroidery, crochet, knitting and such as well as the foods. They give demonstrations of these types through-out each day which can be fun to watch. My sister and I watched a felting demonstration, which was very interesting, especially as neither one of us knew what it was before it started. It was given by a woman from ‘Yarn’, a yarn store in Hutchinson, which is home to the state fair.

She even let us try adding a few colorful touches to the piece that we watched her make after it was rinsed and ready to be decorated. This is me giving it a try. It was very interesting to watch but I have way too many things I want to do to really want to do this myself. There aren’t enough hours in a day for me to take up another hobby!

There were some wonderful quilts, too, lots and lots of them. This is only a very small fraction of what they had on display. I’m glad I’m not a judge – I don’t see how they can decide on which ones are the best.
This one looks to be a queen or king size quilt done entirely in crazy quilting. It was amazing! BTW, I didn’t pull back the plastic to look at it but I took advantage of it to take a picture. My picture does not do this quilt justice of how amazing it is and the colors aren’t quite right either. It is spectacular! The judges thought so, too, it got a Best of Show ribbon (but not grand champion or runner up).
There wasn’t a lot of knitting or crochet either, though a lot more than the tatting. I just thought this crocheted wedding dress was so beautiful. I didn’t see a ribbon on it, but it could have been tucked in behind somewhere.

These are the State Fair dolls. They are supposed to represent a favorite part of the fair. Didn’t they have some cute ideas for these?

There are so many things I wanted to take pictures of that I didn’t! Such as the Duct tape clothing (completely out of different colored Duct tape) and the most original hand bags (made from the same pattern but using unusual mediums) but my batteries in the camera were running low. And did I bring any more? NO. Could I find any place to buy any? NO. And my grandson was coming so I had to be stingy on picture taking until I could get a few (okay, a lot) of him enjoying his first fair. Those are pictures I’ll be sharing in another post.

My tea for today’s Tatting Tea Tuesday was a nod in the direction of the cabinet I keep it in. We had several errands to run and a multitude of things that had to get done around the house today and I just didn’t take the time to fix myself any. I did get some tatting done that I’m pretty excited about, but that, too, will have to wait for another post.

May all of you have a wonderful week. Try to get in a little tatting if you can!
