Tatting Tea Tuesday on Flag Day

Are your flags flying today? It’s Flag Day today here in the United States. My family observed Flag Day when I was young, and still do today. I’ve done so, some years with more awareness than others. And I’m sure I learned all about it in grade school but I had to look it up to refresh my memory. If you are interested in a short history of Flag Day you might try this site.

In the midst of all the things that are going on in my life right now I hadn’t really noticed that it was going to be Flag Day today until yesterday. I thought it would be nice to have a little something to wear to celebrate the day. And I needed a little break from my Heart’s Honor bookmark diagramming. I grabbed red, white and blue thread on my way out to work yesterday and started this little pin. I finished it this morning while I ignored a few other things I should have been doing. I’m going to wear it to work today. If my count is correct this will be #20 of my second 25 Motif Challenge. I’ve done a few more things that could have been counted but I keep forgetting to until I’ve already posted!

While at Hobby Lobby in Wichita this week I happened to notice a yarn shop I hadn’t seen before called Odd Balls Yarn Shop. I hadn’t noticed it before because it just opened in March (I don’t get to Hobby Lobby as much as I’d like to). I had a whole list of things to do but I decided to take a few minutes and check it out – maybe it carried tatting thread. It’s a nice, large shop with an area for open stitch (chatting area) and a lot of yarn for knitting and crocheting but I didn’t see anything for tatting. But I did see some finished tatting that was for sale. I got to meet the tatter-in-house and we spoke a little of tatting and threads and such. She said that the buyer was currently at a (thread? fiber?) show and was planning on bringing home some shuttles and threads, brands as yet unknown. So this is definitely a shop to keep in mind if you are in Wichita and need a place to sit and stitch and would like to talk to other fiber artists. And maybe purchase some thread or shuttles ๐Ÿ™‚

The Heart’s Honor pattern is currently being test tatted – or the top, heart part is. So far it has few issues, but I have gotten some great feedback from the test tatters. Thanks to all of you who are helping me out. I’m having some difficulties with the second part, mostly trying to get the perspective correct. I should have more time to get into it after this weekend so I’ll get serious then.

Today for Tatting Tea Tuesday I had iced green tea with a squirt of MIO liquid Mango Peach. It was delicious! And I was tatting my flag pin while I sipped it – totally into the communi-tea today.

  1. Wow, can you believe I didn't realize it was flag day today, even after seeing many flags flying high? (Talk about slow on the uptake!)

THANK YOU for posting about Flag Day on Tatting Tea Tuesday AND for tatting you darling little Flag Day pin. So cute!

Your post, as usual, is such a good read! I always look forward to you latest entry.

  2. Hi Wanda!

I knew you'd have something clever to show for Flag Day, and indeed that's an excellent stylistic flag pin you have designed! You're a dedicated Patriot and tatter!

I was excited recently to find on the internet the 1976 Workbasket magazine that has the wonderful 12" x 8" tatted flag pattern (designer unknown!) that Nancy in Dallas (of the blog "New to Me") recently finished tatting and posted about. I'm hoping to tat it eventually (could take a long time!), but all my hobbies are on hold at the moment. It will look great in DH's den, along with all his patriotic stuff. Must keep my mind on the projects in the house for now!

It's fun to look through the magazine and see what was popular back then. The country was 200 years old and I was a mere 32 (*wistful sigh*). Tatting, for me, was still 13 years in the future!

The Bicentennial kind of started the 'back to handcrafts" movement and the craft show craze in the US. The long skirt on the model on the cover was made with crocheted Granny Squares, and that pretty much sums up the 'fashion' look of the era, plus the crocheted ponchos!

Thanks for reminding us of Flag Day! It kind of sneaked up on me!

  3. I like your pin flag we do not have flag day here in the UK, nice to see your flags flying which reminds that when I worked in the city of London on the 4th July I used to walk passed many US companies with there flags flying high, its my birthday day on the 4th it made my day feel even brighter seeing your flags.

  4. Happy Flag Day! We always make sure our flag is out, but I think we forget to remember the significance of the day. I love your pin – very nice.

I love that MIO stuff – I never thought about adding it to other tea. Your creativity continues ๐Ÿ™‚

  5. Yes! Yes! Yes! We had our flag up too!! I even wore Red, White and Blue to tatting last night! lol I made myself a red/white/blue tatted bracelet and wore it too! Love you post. Thank you!

  6. It seems to have sneaked up on several of us, Isdihara. The pin was a fun break from other things.

Thanks, Fox, about the pin and the blog.

Thank you, Margarets. I'm glad the flags add to your happiness on your birthday. And it's coming soon! Happy birthday early.

Thank, Kathy! I almost missed it. I'm now thinking of what I'm going to do for the 4th – and if I'll have time! I
I hadn't learned tatting yet in 1976, it was about 4 years later I learned. I saw Nancy's tatted flag when she posted about it – a great project but a lot of work.

Hey, Cindy, I think we all need to be reminded of things like this every once in awhile. But all the flags flying sure looks great!
Yes, do try the MIO with some tea and see what you think. I thought it was very refreshing – and tasted good, too ๐Ÿ™‚

Nancy, your tatted flag helped me remember the day. I happened to visit your blog – again – and saw it, again, and realized what day it was. That really is a great job on the flag. I didn't see your bracelet posted, did I miss that?
